Nothing is collected.

There is no server behind co-nexx.us that could hold anything about you, and no account to attach it to. That is the whole of it — the rest of this page is the detail underneath.

There is no account

No email address, no phone number, nothing to verify. You choose a passphrase and pick a codename, and the codename comes from your own key rather than from anything you typed.

There is no list of who uses the app, because there is nowhere to keep one.

What stays on your device

Your identity's private key and the contents of your messages are encrypted with the passphrase you chose. What sits beside them is not: the codenames you have exchanged messages with, the rooms and feeds you belong to, and when things arrived. Your device's own app storage is what protects those.

None of it is backed up to Google or Apple. The app asks both systems to leave its storage out of their backups, so a phone backup carries no trace of your messages or your identity. Moving to another device means exporting your identity yourself, into a file encrypted behind a passphrase you choose.

What leaves your device

Messages, sealed before they go, and mixed in transit with everyone else's.

Pictures leave without their EXIF — the block a camera writes into an image file, carrying the make and model of the device and, often, the coordinates where the picture was taken. It is removed before the picture is sent, on every path that sends one.

What connecting reveals

Your IP address, to the servers the app connects to, the same as with any app or site that reaches the internet. What travels over that connection is sealed and mixed. That a connection exists at all is not something the app hides.

What the app asks permission for

The camera, to scan a share code or take a picture. The microphone, to record a voice message. On older versions of Android, storage, to put a saved file somewhere you can find it again.

Each is asked for the first time you use the thing that needs it. Decline and the app still runs — you lose that one feature, not the app.

No trackers, no analytics, no ads

There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, and no third-party code that phones home. The app talks to the network it is built on, and to nothing else.

The same goes for this site: no cookies, no trackers, and nothing loaded from anywhere but here.

Not for children

co-nexx.us is not intended for children, and nothing in it is designed or offered for them.

Changes, and questions

This page changes when the app does. Anything you want to ask about it goes to support@co-nexx.us.
